Background
Our Official Community Plans (OCP) support a pattern of land use that:
- Retains both the rural and natural character of the area
- Protects and enhances the natural environment, its ecosystems and
biological diversity
- Supports planned community development in conjunction with
residential, agricultural, forestry, commercial, tourism and
recreational activities
Our desire is to maintain the rural and natural character of our two
communities. Elements of the Capital Regional District's (CRD) Regional
Growth Strategy (RGS), a 25 year plan to guide regional growth and
planned change for the Greater Victoria area, support this goal. The RGS
specifically supports our OCPs' vision of land use planning by requiring
that:
- The majority of future housing in the CRD be located in existing
urban areas
- Population increases in rural areas be limited
- A strong agricultural and resource base be maintained
- A belt of protected green space be created to define the Western
edge of metropolitan Victoria
- An integrated system of parks, greenways and trails be created to
protect important natural areas and link town to country
